    Study East Asian Calligraphy

One of the most widespread expressions of art in the world is calligraphy. Every civilization with a writing system throughout history has expressed their thoughts, ideas, beliefs and stories in written form. Before the age of book printing texts were copied by hand, every single document was handwritten. To own a book was a sign of wealth and power, the percentage of an population that could read and write were often below 5% before the 16th century. Written language had because of this massive status, it was for the elite.

So when the text itself was so special it’s no surprise that the look of it changed, the more beautiful the text became the more it increased in prestige. So thousands of years ago was calligraphy born, an art form used by kings to show their subjects who’s in power and for the common author to spread the word.

But in one place of the world, calligraphy changed many thousands of years ago, there the letters of the language had meanings of their own and several pronunciations. This was in ancient China, were Chinese characters first was invented. The Chinese calligraphy was aware of its own nature in a completely unique way, it became a new medium for human expression.
The Chinese characters has one or several meanings together with one or several sounds, these meanings have however not just one character representing them but many, making the system very complicated.

But calligraphy took it to a whole new level, out of the complexity was born a form of calligraphy that not only expressed the written word, but also carried an emotional message to the reader. Through different styles and techniques the calligraphist of East Asia tries first and foremost to ad emotion and feeling to a text. That is the main objective when writing that kind of calligraphy, a poem or story gain so much from these emotions hidden in the characters for the untrained eye. I have written a longer article on this topic with images and videos, feel free to check it out and leave me a comment. I hope that you, just as I, will discover the beauty of East Asian calligraphy.
