    Emergency Food Preparedness Tips

Many people want to store emergency food in their homes. However, many of them are confused on what type of food is the best for stockpiling. The two major choices are freeze dried food and grocery canned food. Which one is better? What type of food should you prefer? This article will try to answer these questions.
Freeze dried food is a popular choice. This is the type of food which was cooked and then freeze dried. You may find this food in single components and in whole meals. To prepare this type of food you need to add some boiling water to it. Freeze dried food is usually sold in cans or pouches. The main advantage of these food products is their extremely long shelf life. Many freeze dried food products may last for more than twenty years. This means you could just buy this food once and forget about it for the next twenty years.
Canned food is also easily available in most grocery stores. This type of food usually lasts for a couple of years. However, many people claim that this food stays good much longer than it is marked on the label. Canned food is also much cheaper than freeze dried products. That is why it is rather popular among Americans who store emergency food.
What type of food is the best for emergency food storage? In fact, both of them are quite good. However, many people could not afford freeze dried food. One serving of freeze dried meat could cost at least three dollars. And a whole can of beef costs around one or two dollars. Such cans may contain one or two servings in them. That makes the difference in prices really great. And that is why most people tend to stockpile canned food from their local grocery stores.
If you are not on a tight budget, then you should probably store both types of food for better variety. Freeze dried food is lighter and requires less storage space. That is why it could be really convenient for emergency storage. And even though freeze dried foods require some cooking, they are also great for emergency situations.
MREs or Meals Ready to Eat are also very popular among those who store emergency foods. These foods do not require any cooking and are rich in calories and proteins. So if you have such a possibility, you could also add some of them to your food storage.
No matter what you store make sure you and your family will be glad to eat those foods. You should always store something that you will eat rather then something that it convenient to store. That is why each family should make their own list of foods to store.
